The Drop Project is a multimedia campaign initiated by three CalArts students brought together by the CalArts Collaborates class. Bringing together Graphic Design and Film/Video students, the class partnered with the World Resource Institute to reach out to global youth and educate them about the WRI’s Ocean Initiative through creative means.

This project was a collaboration with Hannah Saidiner (Experimental Animation) &#38;amp; Stella Oei (Character Animation).

︎ OUR APPROACH︎

We realized the best way to connect with a youth audience is through digital platforming. From there, we decided to create an app along with our PSA to both generate motivation and turn that motivation into direct action.

Our first goal was to create a brand identity for The Drop Project. We focused in on attributes that worked for a non-profit organization and for a youth audience.&#38;nbsp;

With Stella, our resident Character Animator, we created Drip Drop, a young water droplet in the process of learning how to become a climate activist. We wanted Drip Drop to guide our audience through the tasks and challenges in our app.

I took the lead on the app, combining the ideas that Hannah, Stella and I had shared throughout the process of developing The Drop Project. The main goal was to create fun interactions for a young audience to learn how to change their daily habits to be beneficial towards the environment.&#38;nbsp;

This was an absolutely life-changing experience for me. Collaborating with artists from different backgrounds, but all with a common goal, allowed me to learn many new things about my work and myself. Every part of this project was whole-heartedly a collaboration. We all had our fingers in each other’s pies, leading to a final product that none of us could create on our own.&#38;nbsp;

Our first print advertisement was a Call for Submissions. We wanted to cover all the doors of the graphic design studios to make sure everyone saw it. Ed Fella left a note on this studio door so we decided to put it on the wall next to it.

Our advertising goal was to go big or go home. Our plan to save money and create less waste (than the traditional silkscreened promotions), was to create large tiled posters on recyclable materials. Instead of spreading our reach, we would just create a small number of very big impacts. For our first poster, we planned to hang it in a common staircase that the majority of students pass by on a daily basis. We were fortunate that CalArts has such a small campus that most students pass by the same common areas. We started by tiling together larger chunks to save tape and make the process easier. Our next poster was placed in the design program’s hallway. While mostly designers would pass by there, there are also dance and theater studios nearby. The purpose of this poster was to let the designers know what was up, though.

The final poster was by far our most ambitious poster to date. We wanted to cover the wall near the cafeteria, which happens is also the most popular common space of CalArts. Most students will pass by this area whether or not they are eating a meal there. We called for help from a couple of our friends who were still awake at midnight and got to work.

For the first time in several years, we reached out to the alum network for designs as well. We were hoping to create a sort of homecoming with this year’s T-Shirt Show. In return, we received a total of almost 50 designs from students, alumni, and faculty of the CalArts Graphic Design Program. While we were planning on printing every design we received, due to our limited budget, we had to cut out a couple. We ended up printing 45 different designs. 
The shirts and totes that we sell for T-Shirt Show are designed and printed by students every year. Four of us stayed up until 4 AM for two days printing all of our designs. After over 20 hours, we finished all 45 designs. Most of the designs got 13 shirts as well as 2 tote bags. We also printed on yellow paper for a catalogue book we made and sold.

Finally, the big day had come. We had recruited several students to help us with selling the day of T-Shirt Show.We started with creating one last tiled poster that showed all of the designs we were selling that day. We also had individual sheets that showed all the designs so people could choose while in line.

In the end, we sold out of 30+ of our designs, with very few of the leftover designs. We also were selling leftover shirts from previous years for half the price. In total, we earned around $4,000 for our program.

My final project at CalArts is a digital archive of a Chinese-American history told through the lens of my own family history. I scanned hundreds of photos, interviewed family members, and researched endlessly, to try and represent the millions of choices and reactions my progenitors made to lead us exactly where we are today.This project has really changed my relationship to my family and family history. I uncovered things I wish I could forget, and learned to accept mistakes I thought I could never accept. 
The site is semi-functional here, but is still a work in progress.&#38;nbsp;

Using an accordion fold book, similar to traditional Chinese writing as the format, I combined photos from all throughout our family history to create a non-traditional semi-functional/semi-narrative tree.

Every year a group of mostly 4th year students will put together a gallery to showcase the year’s work. This year, we wanted to “go big or go home”. Unfortunately, we were quite literally forced to “go home”.

In response, we remodeled our gallery to be virtual. I took on the responsibility of designing and developing the site. Because of our short turnaround, the other portion of this project was managing tasks for other students (most with no coding experience) to help make this site possible. In the end, we created a showcase including almost every student in both our Bachelor’s and Master’s program. The site includes individual pages for each student’s projects as well as a collective overview of CalArts Graphic Design.View the site here.

For every student who submitted work, we created a personal page to showcase their projects. Featuring up to four projects of any medium, every student was given a space to exhibit what they created in the last year. Making use of the digital medium, we also asked students to fill out a survey with questions pertaining to our theme of making it big.&#38;nbsp;

From before we were forced to go digital, we wanted to highlight the spirit of the CalArts Design Program. We decided that showcasing some of the fun photos we’ve taken along the way would be a great heartfelt way to show how much of a family our program really is. ︎︎︎ LACERATE&#38;nbsp;︎︎︎


Lacerate is a serif typeface that combines harsh corners with soft curves, creating an image of working contradiction. It often breaks or rewrites existing structures of categorization, taking the interesting features of other styles and making them its own. 


For a special feature, I made an italic with sweeping calligraphic swashes. This typeface definitely looks most flavorful when paired together. This was my first take on type design and was a thoroughly exciting exploration.

︎ PROCESS︎Because this project centers around the CalArts Graphic Design Program, I did a deep dive on everything to do with our program.&#38;nbsp;I started by looking at past versions of the design site and listed things that worked and things that didn’t. This allowed me to generate the scope of the new site, focusing on creating the most helpful resource that the site could be and highlighting the integral elements that make our program what it is.

Next was a process of researching and contacting current students, faculty, and alumni in order to get portfolio links and curate an organized list of alumni based off of design practice. 
INITIAL DESIGN EXPLORATIONS ︎I decided the design site should keep the simplicity of the previous sites through a single scroll experience. However, I wanted it to feel contemporary and match the caliber of work the students in my department work.

CLASS PHOTO ︎Both the design faculty and I wanted to keep the fun/quirky nature of the design program in some part of the site, and so I wanted to create a class photo. Because everyone’s schedules were so different, I found a better solution would be to take photos of them separately and Photoshop them together. It also made it much easier for each individual to have fun with the photoshoot.

		<description>POWER &#38;amp; SPACE&#38;nbsp;︎
This projects centers around two great designers, one historical and the other contemporary. I chose Sheila De Bretteville from a list of twenty historical designers and after researching through as many contemporary feminist designers as I could find, the designer I chose to align De Bretteville with was Anja Kaiser, a Leipzig based designer who incorporates her political beliefs in her everyday graphic design projects. 


The product of this project resulted in a foldable poster that works as a publication and a poster.
