THE UNHAPPY PRINCESS ︎

Based off of Peter Biľak’s History, this project is an exploration of the anatomy, systems and interpretations of a typeface. Starting with Baskerville, I explored the base, serifs, outlines, inlines, features, and fills of the letterforms.

Next, came a type specimen for the layered typeface, which used elements from victorian fairytales and illuminated manuscripts to match its essence..

I was also interested in how books have an interesting connection to the body, with terms that match our anatomy (header, body, footer, etc.), and wanted to use that as a device to connect the content to the design.

As the poster unfolds, the narrative of a storybook unfolds as well. Just like the layers of the typeface, the specimen has layers of different narratives and metaphors.
